Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles
Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles are a four-piece band composed of Billy Bibby, Rob Jones, Matt Thomas, and Mike Pearce. This new musical venture fronted by singer-songwriter and founding Catfish and the Bottlemen lead guitarist Billy Bibby has been keeping busy in 2016 with the release of a debut EP, a follow-up single, and over 50 gigs and festival appearances including Focus Wales, Dot to Dot Manchester, Kendal Calling, Coastline, Blackfest, TFest, and Southsea Fest. In addition to building up a solid grassroots following through touring, the band has caught the attention of industry tastemakers such as Adam Walton of BBC Introducing Wales, Clint Boon, Phil Clifton, and Jo Good of Radio X, Tim Cocker of Virgin Radio UK, Jim Gellatly of Amazing Radio, NME, and over 100 other radio and media outlets in the UK and abroad.
Manchester music legend Clint Boon described the band's music as "that classic sort of British songwriting with a strong nod to Americana" naming Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen as points of reference. The band's influences remain diverse and ever-changing, both classic and cutting edge, with new songs constantly being added to the live repertoire. Although the band is recently formed, reviewers consistently remark that the level of musicianship is such that they play like a veteran ensemble, with Bibby bringing the experience of seven years of gigging and songcraft from his Catfish days to every show and in every heartfelt song he's written.
